Insurance surveys
Before an insurer covers a boat, it wants to know her condition and her value. A survey answers both in writing, with photos, so the policy is written on facts.
An insurance survey is a close look at the whole boat: hull, deck, rig, engine, electrical and safety gear. Anything that needs attention is noted and sorted by how urgent it is.
The report goes to you, and you send it to your insurer. Often it also becomes the most useful maintenance list you will ever have for the boat.
What is included
- A walk-through of hull, deck, rig, engine, electrical and safety gear

- An estimate of value when the insurer asks for one

- Who your insurer is, and any survey requirements they sent you

- Her paperwork: licence or registration, and any past surveys
Questions
Will my insurance company accept the survey?
Ask your insurer first and tell Simon who they are. Some companies keep a list of surveyors they work with.
Does the boat need to be out of the water?
Some insurers want the hull seen out of the water. Check their requirements. A lot of the inspection can be done afloat.
How long does it take?
It depends on the size and type of boat. Most of the time goes into the inspection itself, then the report is written up.
